How to Improve Your Website Loading Speed

Improve website loading speed with a practical checklist for measurement, images, scripts, fonts and caching, then verify the effect on your key pages.

A useful website performance review starts with the pages customers depend on: your homepage, main service page, product listing and enquiry form. Measure representative pages before changing them so you have a baseline to compare against.

Test realistic visitor journeys

Record the device, connection and page used for each test. Review initial loading, interactions and visible layout movement. Repeat the same journey after a change, including submitting or validating forms. A single performance score is less useful than knowing which part of the customer’s task is slow.

Give images the right priority

Resize images for their displayed dimensions and use an appropriate compressed format. Supply dimensions so the browser can reserve layout space. Load images further down the page when they approach the viewport, while keeping the main visible image available immediately. Google’s browser image loading guide explains native lazy loading and why above-the-fold images should not be deferred.

Review scripts and fonts

Inventory analytics, chat, advertising and embedded widgets. For each, identify its owner and whether the page needs it. Test the effect of removing unused scripts in a preview environment before changing production.

Review the font families and weights actually displayed. Check that text remains readable while fonts load and that a font change does not move important controls unexpectedly.

Check delivery and caching

Use the browser’s network panel to inspect slow requests and repeated downloads. Review response sizes, compression and cache headers for the files that matter most. Set long cache lifetimes only when your release process changes the URL whenever the underlying file changes.

Verify one change at a time

Keep a short record of the baseline, the change and the result. Check key pages on mobile as well as desktop, and monitor real visitor experience after release when that data is available. Performance should remain part of your maintenance process as content and integrations grow.
